Positive results for Indian leather exports

Indian leather and leathergoods exports increased in value between April and December 2008. Exports for the sector totalled $2.8 billion compared with $2.6 billion in the prior-year period.

According to the breakdown, leather garment exports rose 25.9% to $331.5 million compared with $26.3 million in the April-December 2007 period. Similarly, leathergoods exports rose 15.8% to $675 million from $582.78 million, while leather footwear exports rose 11% to $897.3 million from $808.27 million.

However, saddlery and harness exports fell 4.7% to $33.3 million from $34.9 million, footwear components dropped 2.9% to $199.6 million from $205.6 million and finished leather exports fell 3.9% to $578.6 million from $602.3 million.

The major export destinations Indian leathergoods were Germany with a share of 13.8%, followed by Italy (13%), the UK (11.5%), the US (9.7%), Hong Kong (7.3%), France (6%), Spain (5.8%), the Netherlands (4.1%), the UAE (2.6%), Denmark (1.7%), Belgium (1.5%) and Australia (1.5%).
