Gentleman of the leather industry dies

Irvine Popplewell, the former senior sales representative at the Garston Tannery in Liverpool, has died at the age of 84.
Mr Popplewell's career in the leather industry began in 1950 when he joined the sales team that the Highfield Tanning Company in Runcorn. In spite of Runcorn's important tanning tradition, Highfield closed down in 1967, but Mr Popplewell moved almost immediately to Garston and stayed there until his retirement in 1990.
The former owner of the Garston facility, Nicholas Boston, told leatherbiz that Irvine Popplewell had been a popular and well known figure throughout the global leather industry, adding: "He was a very pleasant and likeable person, one of the gentlemen of the trade."
Mr Popplewell's funeral takes place on Tuesday, April 28 at Heath Methodist Church, Vista Road, Runcorn, starting at 2.30 pm.
