RO units to start up in June

21/04/2009

According to reports, two reverse osmosis (RO) plants in the Ambur and Vaniyambadi leather clusters, near Chennai, India, will be up and running by June. Involving an investment of approximately $14 million, the units have been set up following a number of complaints about effluent discharge.

The Ambur unit will serve 57 factories and has a capacity of 2,400 litres a day. It is believed the plant will reduce water consumption in the region by approximately eight million litres of water a day. The quality of leather produced at the factories is also set to improve as the water used will have been purified.

Membranes for the two plants will be imported from Holland and the US, and the units will cost around $16,000 a month to run.
