Added value goods exports rise
In spite of the international financial crisis which has affected the performance of Brazilian leather exports, Brazil has seen an increase in the volume of added value article exports, according to the Centre for the Brazilian Leather Exports (CICB).
“In 2000, finished product exports accounted for 29.21% of the volume exported and 42.77% of the revenue. In 2008, shipments grew to account for 64.52% of the volume and 77.66% of the revenue," says Luiz Bittencourt.
In the first two months of 2009, semi-finished and finished leather exports rose to US$148.4 million and 73.6% in revenue and 57.3% in volume.
The Brazilian leather sector comprises approximately 800 tanneries and employs 50,000 people. Brazilian leather is exported to almost 100 countries including China, Italy, the US, India, Vietnam, Indonesia, Mexico, Peru, Germany, Portugal and Norway.
