Leather exports fall
According to the Bangladesh's Export Promotion Bureau, the country’s total leather exports fell 10.34% to $266.7 million between July 2008 and February 2009 compared with $297.46 million in the same period last year.
The breakdown showed that leather footwear exports rose 22% in value to $131.5 million compared with $108.09 million, while leather bag and purse exports rose 72% to $10.5 million from $6.1 million in the corresponding period last year.
However, finished leather exports fell 33.1% to $124.7 million in the first two months of the year compared with $186.3 million in the same period last year.
Bangladesh’s ambitious target for the leather sector this year is $526.1 million compared with $462.8 million in 2008.
