According to reports, approximately 200,000 protestors gathered in Rome on April 4 to urge the government to do more to save jobs and to protect people from the effects of the credit crunch.

According to CGIL, (the Italian General Confederation of Labour) many workers from the leather, leathergoods, footwear and textiles industries joined the protest as fears about job security and business closures continue to rise.

Secretary general of textile and clothing federation FILTEA (Federazione Italiana Lavoratori Tessili Abbigliamento), Valeria Fedeli, said that the crisis was “profound and complex” and that unity within the business sector will be of the utmost importance.

Former labour minister and chief employment spokesman for Italy’s (opposition) Democratic Party, Cesare Damiano, said in a statement: “The government must invest important resources in policies supporting economic development.”
