Italy earthquake claims lives and homes

06/04/2009

A devastating earthquake struck in central Italy in the early hours of April 6. Initial reports suggest that at least 50 people have been killed, while many more have been trapped and injured.

Officials in L’Aquila and surrounding areas, where the earthquake struck, believe the death toll could climb dramatically, although rescue teams are doing all they can to free people from the rubble. L’Aquila's mayor, Massimo Cialente, said approximately 100,000 people had been forced to leave their homes. Many local businesses in the area, including leather and footwear companies, will also have been affected by the quake.

Italian president Silvio Berlusconi has declared a state of emergency and has cancelled a visit to Russia in order to visit the mountainous region.

Our thoughts are with all those affected by this terrible earthquake.
