Export prospects poor

The president of the Brazilian tanners’ association, CICB, Luiz Bittencourt, has warned that the value of the country’s leather exports in 2009 are likely to fall to $1 billion.

Exports of wet blue, crust and finished leather were worth $2 billion in 2007. Last year, owing to a difficult last quarter, the total dropped to $1.8 billion. But Mr Bittencourt said that, with the way 2009 was going, his prediction for export values for the year was $1 billion, half the amount of money Brazil’s leather industry brought in two years ago.

He said Brazil imported only $150 million worth of leather.
