Independência closes units in Goias and Mato Grosso

27/03/2009

Frigorifico Independência has announced that it is closing its units located in Senador Canedo, in the state of Goiás, and Anastácio, in Mato Grosso do Sul.

According to a statement from the company, the closures are part of a wider restructuring programme. Operations have been severely affected by a drastic reduction in both domestic and international demand for beef, as well as the drop in beef prices.

The Senador Canedo unit employs approximately 1,100 people and has a daily slaughter capacity of 1,400 head. The Anastácio unit empolys almost 900 workers and has a daily slaughter capacity of 1,000 animals.

“Closing these units has been a very difficulty decision but we must preserve the financial health of our company in order to guarantee future operations,” said Roberto Graziano Russo, the company’s chief executive.
