The leather cluster in the Indian state of Bengal has said the jobs of nearly 300,000 people could be at risk after sharp falls in exports of leather gloves produced in 400 factories there.

Exports fell by 34% in February compared to the month before, dropping to around $13 million from $19.5 million in January.

The leather industry in Bengal has also claimed that client organisations in the US and Europe have begun to demand discounts of between 20% and 30% because of lower raw material prices in hte last six months.
