‘Hide market crash’ discussion at APLF
25/03/2009
A seminar session examining the effect on the leather industry of the current imbalance in global hide trading will take place on April 2 as part of the APLF event in Hong Kong.
Among the subjects under discussion will be how the industry can deal with the lowest raw material prices ever seen, what can be done with a worldwide surplus of raw material, how to resolve the financial and contractual problems that the crisis has already caused, and how consumer demand is likely to develop.
Speakers will include industry commentator Ron Sauer, who said recently: “The leather industry has no control over the supply of its raw material. As long as there is a demand for meat—and there is—its by-product, hides and skins, keep coming in hundreds of thousands, every day.”
Other participants will include Madam Zhang Shuhua, chairman of the China Leather Industry Association (CLIA) and president of ICHSLTA, John Reddington, president of the US Hide, Skins and Leather Association, Luis Bittencourt and Wolfgang Goerlich, from the Centre of the Brazilean Leather Industry (CICB), Dr Zackria Sait, chairman of the Indian Finished Leather Manufacturers Association, Paul Pearson, general secretary of the International Council of Tanners, Joel Lecroq of K Star Footwear and US-based industry consultant, David Peters.
The organisers believe the session, which will run from 10.30 am until 12.30 pm in room 607 in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, will be of interest to representatives of leather trade associations from around the world, representatives of the world’s leading meat packers, traders and tanners, industry analysts and consultants and industry media.
The seminar is free but registration is required. To register, leatherbiz readers can click on the link below.
