New tax for tanners

The Turkish government has introduced a new tax called a Private Consumer Tax (PCT), which will apply to imported
fats and oils.
All types of synthetic and natural oils, including chemically modified fatliquors, are affected. The PCT for chemically modified fatliquors is EUR 0.4 per kilo.
The president of Turkish Leather Foundation, Mr Mahmut Yesil, commented: “The new regulation will be very harmful for leather industry, which uses a high amount of imported fatliquors. We are already faced with a global crisis and our capacities are down. Under these conditions how can we carry this burden of extra EUR 15 million per year. This new tax will upset the goodwill of our industry.”
