Positive signs in India

Overseas sales of Indian leather are beginning to pick up, but overall exports may start growing only after June, the country's trade secretary, Gopal Pillai, has said.

"I expect exports to stabilise in April, May and June, and for a recovery to follow," he told reporters.

Since December, the government and central bank have announced a series of measures to help exporters and to prevent job cuts.

Mr Pillai said exports of leather, as well as textiles, gems and jewellery, all of which contribute heavily in India's total exports, were showing signs of picking up.
