Cheap price of hides

The Bangladesh Hides and Skins Merchants' Association has said hides are now being traded in the Asian country at around half of last year's prices.

The association told local media that different grades of preserved hides were selling for between $0.50 and $0.80 per square foot, whereas last year they could have been confident of receiving around $1.30 per square foot for some grades.

It pointed out that these prices meant many traders were unable to cover their costs.

Nearly 100 million square feet of rawhide are available in Bangladesh annually, and last financial year, export earnings from leather reached $284 million. Early figures for the current financial year have shown a decline in export earnings of 17%.
