Women leaders in leather

18/03/2009

One interesting fact to have emerged since small leather-sector companies in the town of Millau in southern France combined forces to promote the town and the industry (leatherbiz, January26) is that a large proportion of these firms are now run by women.

Of the 16 companies that form the town's Leather Collective, nine are run by women.

In many cases, the women are from traditional leathergoods families and have worked their way up to take charge of their companies.

The companies include Jolain, a leathergoods manufacturer run by Josiane Lugans, Mégisserie Alric, a tannery run by Emilie Duchêne, and Atelier du Gantier, a manufacturer of the product for which Millau is most famous, gloves, run by Chantal Canillac.
