President Tabaré Vázquez of Uruguay has singled out the country’s leather industry (along with textiles and automotive) as one of the sectors to have suffered most as the global economic downturn begins to take effect on his country’s economy.

Speaking at a meeting on climate change, Dr Vázquez said: “The consequences of the economic situation are begining to make an impact on specific areas of the Uruguayan economy. But the world still needs to feed itself and if raw materials start to drop in price, the recovery will be rapid.”

His government has announced a package of measures to help Uruguayan companies come through the downturn.
