From Land of Leather to World of Sofas
13/03/2009
The founders of the Land of Leather furniture chain, which went into administration at the start of this year, are preparing to set up a new group of stores.
Under the name World of Sofas, Paul Briant, Steve Dowdall and Peter Ling hope to have ten new stores open by the end of the summer. They will re-establish some of the relationships they had before with manufacturers of leather-upholstered furniture in Asia and aim to supply the mid-market tier in the UK.
The furniture market overall is still very slow, but Mr Briant said he and his partners were optimistic. He said: "Business is bad for everybody at the minute but the positives outweigh the negatives. For example, shipping rates have never been lower. With the demise of Land of Leather and [rival furniture chain] MFI there are a lot of opportunities out there. We're going to run a very tight ship and watch our costs."
