Exports up, in spite of leather

The Export Promotion Bureau of Bangladesh has announced an 11.8% increase on the country's export figures for January, compared to the same month in 2008.

The organisation said that clothing and textiles had provided most of the growth, but that exports of leather and leathergoods had fallen.

The government has said it will launch a stimulus package for exporters this month. It has set a target of bringing in $16.3 billion from exports during this financial year, which ends in June. The total for January was $1.4 billion.

The target for the leather sector for the financial year is $526.1 million, compared to $462.8 million in the previous year. But the country’s leather exports fell by 10.4% to $210.8 million between July and December 2008.
