Hides and Skins: Net sales for the 2009 marketing year (which began Jan. 1) were 359,200 pieces, including whole cattle hides of 344,900 pieces. The major buyers of whole cattle hides were South Korea (147,600 pieces), China (146,400 pieces), Taiwan (25,500 pieces) and Japan (8,400 pieces). Sales of 4,962,800 pieces, including 4,909,000 pieces of whole cattle hides, were outstanding on Dec. 31, 2008 and carried over to the 2009 marketing year. Exports of hides and skins for Dec. 26-31 totalled 341,700 pieces, including whole cattle hides of 340,600 pieces. The primary destinations for whole cattle hides were China (168,500 pieces), South Korea (80,300 pieces), Hong Kong (24,400 pieces) and Japan (23,500 pieces). Accumulated exports of hides and skins for 2008 were 26,014,400 pieces, down one percent from the prior year’s total of 26,166,700 pieces. Exports for Jan. 1 totaled 61,400 pieces, including whole cattle hides of 58,800 pieces. Exports of whole cattle hides were to China (28,200 pieces), South Korea (18,800 pieces) and Taiwan (11,800 pieces).           

Net sales of wet blues for the 2009 marketing year (which began Jan. 1) totaled 96,100 hides. The buyers were Italy (63,600 unsplit) and China (32,500 unsplit). A total of 679,800 hides were outstanding on Dec. 31, 2008 and carried over to the 2009 marketing year. Exports of 80,700 hides were reported for Dec. 26-31, with the primary destinations of Hong Kong (33,600 unsplit), Italy (16,800 unsplit) and Thailand (9,600 unsplit). Accumulated exports of wet blues totaled 6,222,200 hides, down 14 percent from the 7,202,200 hides exported during the 2007 marketing year. Exports for Jan. 1 were to Italy (3,900 unsplit). No net sales of splits were reported for Jan 1, 2009. Total sales of 3,435,000 pounds were outstanding on Dec. 31 and carried over to the 2009 marketing year. Exports of splits totalling 43,800 pounds were reported for Dec. 26-31. The destination was Hong Kong. Accumulated exports of splits for 2008 totalled 40,034,500 pounds, down 24 percent from the prior year’s total of 52,911,600 pounds. No exports were reported for Jan. 1.
