May 2007

Monthly estimates of the number of cattle, sheep and pigs slaughtered for meat in the United Kingdom are given in the table below. They are shown in statistical months.

Cattle slaughterings down 1.1% in May

The number of cattle slaughtered in May 2007 was 1.1% lower than in May 2006.

A comparison of May 2007 and 2006 figures showed that:

- Sheep slaughterings decreased by 7.2%.

- Pig slaughterings decreased by 2.1%.

 The number of cattle slaughterings in January-May 2007 was 1.8% higher than the corresponding 2006 figure. Over the same period there was a decrease of 10.9% in sheep slaughterings and an increase of 2.4% in pig slaughterings.

Between the periods January to March 2006 and 2007, Ireland, the United Kingdom, France and Greece recorded decreases in sheep slaughterings of 14.6%, 10%, 5.9% and 4.4% respectively.
