April 2007

Monthly estimates of the number of cattle, sheep and pigs slaughtered for meat in the United Kingdom are given in the table below. They are shown in statistical months.

Cattle slaughterings up 7.3% in April

The number of cattle slaughtered in April 2007 was 7.3% higher than in April

2006.

A comparison of April 2007 and 2006 figures shows that:

- Sheep slaughterings decreased 4.1%.

- Pig slaughterings decreased by 0.4%.

The number of cattle slaughterings in January-April 2007 was 2.6% higher than the corresponding 2006 figure. Over the same period there was a decrease of 11.3% in sheep slaughterings and an increase of 3.6% in pig slaughterings.

EU-25 cattle slaughtering figures between the periods January to December 2005 and 2006 decreased by 0.7%. Ireland, Poland and United Kingdom recorded increases of 5.3%, 13.3% and 9.5% respectively. France and Italy recorded decreases of 3.2% and 1.9% respectively.
