Monthly estimates of the number of cattle, sheep and pigs slaughtered for meat in the United Kingdom are given in the table below. They are shown in statistical months.

Cattle slaughterings up 11.3% in January

The number of cattle slaughtered in January 2007 was 11.3% higher than in January 2006. See Table.

A comparison of January 2007 and 2006 figures shows that:

- Sheep slaughterings decreased by 12.6%.

- Pig slaughterings increased by 2.3%.

Between the periods January to October 2005 and 2006, Poland, United Kingdom, Austria and Germany recorded increases in cattle slaughterings of 12.0%, 9.7%, 4.9% and 3.1% respectively. The Netherlands and Spain recorded decreases of 5.9% and 5.4% respectively.
