Monthly estimates of the number of cattle, sheep and pigs slaughtered for meat in the United Kingdom are given in the table below. They are shown in statistical months.

Cattle slaughterings up 14.5% in March

The number of cattle slaughtered in March 2006 was 14.5% higher than in March

2005.

A comparison of March 2006 and 2005 figures shows that:

_ Sheep slaughterings decreased by 16.5%

_ Pig slaughterings decreased by 4.7%

The number of cattle slaughterings in January-March 2006 was 22.4% higher than the corresponding 2005 figure. Over the same period there was a decrease of 6.6% in sheep slaughterings and 1.1% in pig slaughterings.

EU-25 sheep slaughtering figures for the periods January to December 2004 and 2005 decreased by 1.1%. Spain, France and Greece recorded decreases of 4.9%, 2.6% and 1.5% respectively. The United Kingdom recorded an increase of 3.9 %.
