Cattle slaughterings up 63% in January

The number of cattle slaughtered in January 2006 was considerably higher (by 63%) than in January 2005. The number slaughtered in January 2005 was considerably lower than normal, subsequent to the ending of the EU Slaughter Premium.

A comparison of January 2006 and 2005 figures shows that:

- Sheep slaughterings increased by 3.6%.

- Pig slaughterings increased by 1.9%.

EU-15 pig slaughtering figures between the periods January to September 2004 and 2005 decreased by 0.2%. Denmark, France and Spain recorded decreases of 3.5%, 1.5% and 0.3% respectively. Germany and the Netherlands recorded an increase of 4.3% and 0.8 % respectively.
