Cattle slaughterings down 4.7% in August

The number of cattle slaughtered in August 2005 was 4.7% lower than in August 2004. A comparison of August 2005 and 2004 figures shows that :

 - Sheep slaughterings decreased by 2.7%.

 - Pig slaughterings increased by 17.6%.

The number of sheep slaughterings in January-August 2005 was 4.2% higher than the corresponding 2004 figure. Over the same period there was a decrease of 6.3% in cattle slaughterings, while pig slaughterings decreased by 0.8%. EU-15 sheep slaughtering figures between the periods January to May 2004 and 2005 decreased by 0.6%. Spain, France and Greece recorded decreases of 2.6%, 1.3% and 0.4% respectively. The United Kingdom recorded an increase of 4.4%.
