The number of cattle slaughtered in August 2004 was 3.0% higher than in August
2003. A comparison of August 2004 and 2003 figures shows that: Sheep slaughterings increased by 14.4%; pig slaughterings decreased by 3.3%.
The number of sheep slaughterings in January-August 2004 was 7.6% higher than the corresponding 2003 figure. Over the same period there was a decrease of 5.8%
in cattle slaughterings, while pig slaughterings also decreased by 8.6%.
EU sheep slaughtering figures for the period January to April 2003 and 2004 decreased by 0.7%.
