Cattle slaughterings up 9.0% in September
The number of cattle slaughtered in September 2003 was 9.0% higher than in September 2002.
A comparison of September 2003 and 2002 figures shows that:
Sheep slaughterings decreased by 2.8%.
Pig slaughterings decreased by 9.8%.
The number of sheep slaughterings in January-September 2003 was 0.2% lower than the corresponding 2002 figure. Over the same period there was an increase of 5.3% in the number of cattle slaughterings, while pig slaughterings decreased by 7.4%.
EU cattle slaughterings figures for the periods January to April 2002 and 2003 decreased by 2.0%.
