Chinese leather and leather goods imports/exports January - February 2003
According to the China Leather Industries Association (CLIA), during the period January to February 2003, the country’s imports and exports of leather and leather products increased. Imports grew more than exports, however, compared with last month, the growth rate of imports and exports declined.
Exports
For the period, leather exports increased 22.3% to $2.08 billion, compared with 2002, accounting for 3.8% of China’s total export value.
The fastest growth was seen in leather garment exports, which increased 50.8% to $240 million, followed by leather gloves (+35.2% to $170 million) and leather shoes (+21.4% to $770 million). Exports of fur garments rose 16.2% to $13 million and semi and finished leather increased 15.9% to $120 million. By contrast, raw hide exports decreased 17% to $1 million.
Footwear exports totalled 750 million pairs amounting to $1.81 billion - a 9.9% gain on the year before. Leather shoe exports amounted to 160 million pairs, accounting for 22% of total footwear exports. Rubber shoes totalled 410 million pairs, accounting for 55% of the total.
The top ten leather and raw materials importers were Hong Kong (accounting for 54.7% of total export value), South Korea (11.0%), Italy (7.8%), Taiwan (5.8%), Spain (4.9%), United States (2.9%), Vietnam (1.9%), Singapore (1.6%), Thailand (1.6%) and Indonesia (1.2%).
Imports
Raw hide imports totalled $550 million. Imports of leather and leather goods increased 33.5% and accounted for 1% of China’s total. Fur garment imports rose 736.4% to $100,000 and leather garments increased 232.5% to $520,000. Raw hides, excluding fur, went up 35.8% to $120 million, while semi and finished leather increased 36.7% to $360 million.
The top five export markets were the United States (accounting for 16.5% of total export value), Taiwan (16.3%), South Korea (15.6%), Italy (8.3%) and Australia (7.3%).
