Chinese leather and leather goods imports/exports Jan-July `02
According to the China Leather Industries Association (CLIA), during the period January – July 2002 the country’s exports of leather and leather products totalled $7.35 billion – a 4.2% increase on the year before. They also accounted for 4.3% of the total value of national export commodities.
The fastest growth was seen in leather glove exports which increased 51.3% by value, followed by leather balls (+43.6%) and fur garments (+14.4%). Suitcases and leather shoe exports saw increases of 9% and 1.9% respectively. By contrast, leather garment exports were down 13.7% while those of finished leather and hides and shoe accessories saw decreases of 5% and 2.9% respectively.
Footwear exports were up 3.2% to 2.5 billion pairs amounting to $5.96 billion – a 3.5% gain on the year before. Leather shoe exports were up 1.5% to 540 million pairs, accounting for 22% of total footwear exports.
The average export price for leather garments was US$30.43 - $3.06 less than the year before. Leather balls were down $0.16 to $1.28. Leather shoe exports meanwhile were up $1.19 to $4.94 and leather gloves up by $0.25 to $1.19.
The top five export markets for cow hide were Hong Kong (accounting for 56.8% of total export value), South Korea (10.6%), Italy (7.7%), Spain (5.2%) and Taiwan (3.8%).

Imports
Imports of leather and leather products fell 8.2% by value to $1.94 billion with a 7.9% decline being seen in leather and hide (excluding fur) exports to $1.72 billion. Footwear components were down 17.4% to $140 million, with leather and footwear processing machinery falling 1.5% to US$43.65 million and leather gloves by a massive –45.5% to $110,000. Leather cases by comparison were up 12.1% to $23.95 million, leather shoes by +15.5% to $17.52 million and imports of leather garments by +36% to $700,000.
