Hides and Skins: Net sales for the 2004 marketing year (which began Jan. 1) totalled 148,200 pieces, including 140,300 pieces of whole cattle hides. The major buyers of whole cattle hides were China (65,800 pieces), South Korea (25,400 pieces), and Japan (20,600 pieces). Sales of 3,519,900 pieces, including 3,421,600 pieces of whole cattle hides, were outstanding on December 31 and carried over to the 2004 marketing year. Exports of 351,500 pieces (of which whole cattle hides were 329,300 pieces) were reported for the period Dec. 26-31, with China (111,600 pieces) and South Korea (86,700 pieces) the main destinations. Accumulated exports of hides and skins were 25,707,900 pieces, down 1% from the prior year’s total of 25,824,400 pieces. Exports for Jan. 1 were 5,000 pieces, including 3,600 pieces of whole cattle hides, with South Korea (1,700 pieces) and China (1,200 pieces) the primary destinations.
Net sales of wet blues for the 2004 marketing year (which began Jan. 1) totalled 52,600 hides. The buyers were China (17,000 unsplit), Taiwan (13,000 unsplit), the Dominican Republic (12,600 unsplit), and Italy (10,000 unsplit). A total of 301,300 hides were outstanding on Dec. 31 and carried over to the 2004 marketing year. Exports of 186,400 hides were reported for the period Dec. 26-31, bringing accumulated exports of wet blues to 4,704,400 hides, down less than 1% from 4,716,700 hides exported during the 2002 marketing year. The primary destinations were Italy (38,800 unsplit), Taiwan (36,000 unsplit), China (34,400 unsplit), Hong Kong (28,300 unsplit), and South Korea (20,800 unsplit and 3,700 grain split). There were no exports reported for January 1. Net sales of splits totalling 366,000 pounds for the 2004 marketing year were all to South Korea. A total of 12,729,200 pounds were outstanding on December 31 and carried over to the 2004 marketing year. Exports of 867,600 pounds were reported for the period Dec. 26-31, bringing accumulated exports of splits to 81,683,700 pounds, up 11% from the prior year’s total of 73,615,400 pounds. The destinations were Italy (450,000 pounds), Hong Kong (278,700 pounds), China (90,000 pounds), and Indonesia (48,900 pounds). There were no shipments of splits reported for January 1.
