Chinese leather and leather goods imports/exports January-May, 2003

According to the China Leather Industries Association (CLIA), during the period January to May, 2003, the country’s imports and exports of leather and leather products continued to grow, however the rate was lower than the previous month. The import value increased more than export value. The footwear sector achieved faster growth, compared with the same period in 2002. The growth rate of imports was higher than that of exports.

 

The top ten leather and raw materials importers (excluding fur) were Hong Kong (accounting for 57.4% of the total export value), South Korea (9.4%), Italy (7.3%), Taiwan (7.1%), Spain (4.5%), Vietnam (2.8%), United States (2.1%), Thailand (1.5%), Indonesia (1.2%), as well as Singapore (1.0 %). The import value of the latter countries and regions accounted for 94.5% of the total.

 

The top ten raw hides and finished leather importers to China were Taiwan (16.9%), South Korea (16.2%), United States (15.7%), Italy (8%), Australia (6.7%), Brazil (4.4%), Canada (3.1%), Argentina (2.7%), New Zealand (2.6%), Hong Kong (2.2%). The export value accounted for 78.5% of China’s total export value.
