Following the previous week’s relatively robust market, the hide market this past week appears to have found a ceiling. A couple of people remarked at the end of the week that there was a slight pick-up in interest but that there was some push-back of prices, and business volume was down. A moderate number of sales was reported with prices holding steady to firm. BBS, HTS, and HNS on the highest end of their trading ranges all sold for $74 for packer hides. BBS and HTS also had packer trades of $73.50. One supplier reported that cowhides were moving better than steers.
USDA export sales and shipments for week ending October 14 (week 41) had higher than normal sales but less than normal shipments of hides and wet blue. During the week, combined sales of hides and wet blue totalled 643,100 compared to the 573,748 average weekly numbers year-to-date. The two-week average sales totals are 554,150.
Wet blue and whole hide shipments last week totalled 569,100 compared to 598,763 year-to-date weekly average. The two-week total shipment average is 592,050.
For comparison, the kill last week was 659,000 and average YTD is 646,780. In the three years-to-date comparison following, in 2010 slaughter at 26,518,000 exceeds combined hide and wet blue sales by 2,994,305 and shipments by 1,968,700.
The figures for slaughter, sales and shipments up to and including week 41 in 2010 are 26,518,000, 23,523,695 and 24,549,300. The corresponding figures for 2009 are 26,029,000, 24,913,100 and 26,167,100. Those for 2008 are 27,005,000, 25,271,000 and 25,944,300.
