The market wrapped the week with prices up around a dollar on a number of selections of packer steer hides. Included were HTS and HNS at $74 and BS at $73. In addition, a couple of trades for packer jumbo HNS 80+lbs for over $80 were reported. Cow hides were also firm, with some prices steady and some higher than last week’s levels. A number of people commented that sales volume was off this week.
A day later than normal, the USDA export sales report for week ending October 9 was mixed with sales of hides and blue down and shipments about normal. For the week, combined whole hides and wet blue sales were 465,200 compared to the year-to-date weekly average of 572,014. Shipments of whole hides and wet blue totalled 615,000 compared to the 599,505 year-to-date weekly average. Although many people predicted that the Chinese holidays the week before would dampen sales, it is interesting that the largest buyer of whole hides was China with 158,400 out of 378,800 whole hides.
Below is the three-years-to-date comparison of slaughter, whole hide and wet blue sales, and shipments. In 2010, YTD total shipments through week 40 are 23,980,000 or 599,505 on average weekly. The total wet blue and whole hide sales for the same period are 22,880,595 or 572,014 on average weekly. For comparison, the YTD slaughter is 25,859,000 or 645,475 on average per week. The comparative total figures for 2009 are 25,650,600, 24,390,800 and 25,400,000. Those for 2008 are 25,357,400; 24,847,900 and 26,374,000.
US auto sales this past September grew 28.5% from a year ago with 958,966 light vehicle sales. The 2010 calendar year-to-date figures show sales are up 10.3% with total sales of 8,620,557.
