Monthly estimates of the number of cattle, sheep and pigs slaughtered for meat in the United Kingdom are given in the table below. They are shown in statistical months.

The number of cattle slaughtered in July 2009 was 1.9% lower than in July 2008.

A comparison of July 2009 and 2008 figures showed that:

  • Sheep slaughterings decreased by 5.9%
  • Pig slaughterings decreased by 7.8%

The number of cattle slaughterings in January-July 2009 was 6.1% lower than the corresponding 2008 figure. Over the same period there was a decrease of 6.6% in sheep slaughterings and a decrease of 8.9% in pig slaughterings. Between the periods January to May 2008 and 2009, the Netherlands, Denmark, Spain and France recorded decreases in pig slaughterings of 12.3%, 12%, 6%, and 4.7% respectively. During the same period Germany recorded an increase of 2%.
