Market Intelligence: China, the US and the leather supply chain
Our Market Intelligence report for the month of September examines in some detail the current situation in one of the most important trading relationships in the global leather industry.
The statistics show decreases in hide exports from the US, one of the most important sources of raw material, to China, the world’s biggest producer of leather.
The report seeks to go beyond the figures and to look in depth at reasons for the changes that have occurred. One factor is the complexity and cost that the tariff tensions of the last 18 months have added. A second is that a recent surge in demand for automotive leather in China seems to be slowing down now.
