Upcycling champions increase by-products’ value by 2000%

In this article, the World Leather team analysed how much value tanners and finished product manufacturers are currently adding to waste material from the meat and dairy sectors.

Using figures published by the Conseil National du Cuir in France, the conclusion the team came to was that leather manufacturers and their customers are able to increase the value of the by-products from meat and dairy that constitute their raw material by more than two thousand per cent. 

Value addition of 2000% makes leather a true champion of upcycling.

In a recent comment on social media, the chief executive of tanning group PrimeAsia, Jon Clark, paid tribute to the generations of scientists, tanners and equipment manufacturers that have made it possible for groups such as his to produce sustainably.

Thanks to their work, he said all tanners now have an opportunity to produce “the greatest, most versatile upcycled material available today in a clean, responsible and sustainable way”.
