PrimeAsia launches new ‘responsibility’ initiative

Tanning group PrimeAsia has included a new idea in its leather collection for fashion season autumn-winter 20-21. It has developed an idea it calls Responsibly Raised Initiative, which has the aim of promoting good practice in the leather supply chain.

The Responsibly Raised Initiative identifies and promotes projects that are conducive to positive change, enhanced transparency, the better use of resources, fair labour conditions and sound animal welfare standards.

In practice, it will raise the profile of project that PrimeAsia describes as “going one step further”, for example by providing hide traceability to the farms from which the cattle came, and engaging with third-party independent programmes to ensure that the best available animal welfare practices are in place “from farm to leather”. Another key component of the initiative will be projects that work closely with farmers who promote land stewardship; this is to encourage and reward responsible use and conservation of natural resources.

For the new collection, PrimeAsia has partnered with hide supplier Tyson Foods to create leathers from fresh hides from a Tyson programme called Open Prairie Natural Meats. This project ensures that the cattle are all responsibly raised, with strict third-party verification, including animal care standards that apply to all partners and all employees. The animals have a 100% vegetarian diet, and are raised with no antibiotics, no added hormones and no growth-enhancements. Leathers made from this programme are traceable to the cattle’s place of birth and throughout the production cycle.

“This is an exciting initiative and we are working to increase the relevance and visibility of all those concepts in our value chain,” said PrimeAsia chief executive, Jon Clark, at the time of the announcement. He said the group was intent on showing that its leather is “not only a desirable material but also sustainable and made in a responsible way”.
