Brazilian tanners to attend Vietnam event once more despite declines

Brazilian tanning industry body CICB is still enthusiastic about the Vietnamese market and is once again leading a delegation of leather manufacturers to the Vietnam Shoes and Leather Fair, which this year takes place in Ho Chi Minh City from July 10-12.

This year, four tanning companies will take part: Fuga Couros, JBS Couros, Alexander and Empório Yurgel. In 2015, eight Brazilian tanners went and CICB said afterwards that it anticipated an increase of 45% in the amount of leather Vietnamese finished product manufacturers would consume by 2020.

In recent years, Vietnam has consistently been the fourth-biggest export market for Brazilian leather, after China, Italy and the US. In the first five months of 2019, Vietnam-based customers imported 6.1 million square-metres of split, wet blue, crust and finished leather from Brazilian tanneries with a value of $33.2 million.

Compared to the same period in 2015, however, these figures represent a substantial decline. From January-May 2015, Brazilian tanners shipped 11.4 million square-metres of material to Vietnam with a value of $72.7 million. The volume has fallen by 46.5% and the decline in value terms is 54.3%.
