PrimeAsia cuts the ribbon on expanded Vietnam tannery

Tanning group PrimeAsia hosted an open-house event at its tannery in Vietnam on March 8 to celebrate the completion of an expansion project it began in 2015.

The expanded facility, located in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province in southern Vietnam, has given PrimeAsia Vietnam a production capacity of around 6 million square-feet of finished leather per month, compared to 4 million square-feet per month before the project started. The company expects this figure to rise to 7.5 million square-metres per month in the near future.

Welcoming customers, suppliers and local officials to the event, chief executive, Jon Clark, said the investment of $40 million that PrimeAsia has made in expanding its Vietnamese facility represented an investment not just in the company’s own business, but in the businesses of its customers, partners and suppliers too, as well as an investment in PrimeAsia’s own people. He said it was also an investment in Vietnam as “a critical supply chain hub” for the leather and footwear industries.

He thanked outsource athletic footwear manufacturing group Pou Chen, which co-founded PrimeAsia with US leather manufacturer Prime Tanning, for its support and guidance throughout the expansion project.

Mr Clark then addressed the tanning machinery suppliers who have enabled the expansion of PrimeAsia Vietnam and the efficiencies the redeveloped facility is achieving. Many of these companies, including Cartigliano, Erretre, Bauce, Hüni and Feltre, were represented at the event. Jon Clark said: “We would not have been able to complete this project without our amazing equipment suppliers. They are truly world-class suppliers with breathtaking technology.”

Innovations at the expanded plant also include 5,000 square-metres of solar panels that are producing 15% of the total energy requirement at the tannery, enough energy to supply 1,800 cubic-metres of hot water to the production team every day.

PrimeAsia began production in Ba Ria-Vung Tau in 2003 and has, to date, produced 556 million square-feet of leather there.
