APLF to have wider focus on fashion from 2020

The organisers of the APLF event have said the space available to leather industry exhibitors at the next edition, which takes place in Hong Kong from March 13-15, has been “sold out for some time”.

As a result, the show’s owners, UBM Asia and SIC Group, have said that they will move the original leather component of the exhibition to level three of the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) to provide space for more companies to take part. The move, which will take effect at APLF 2020, will also provide more opportunities for leather-sector exhibitors to take up “prime stand locations”, they said.

Three newer components of the event, APLF Materials+, Fashion Access and Cashmere World will be co-located on level one of the exhibition from 2020.

Even though organisers insisted at the time of the announcement that they hope to encourage newer generations of buyers and designers to “reconnect” with the leather supply chain, they said the changes will mean a move away from an emphasis on leather to a wider fashion focus.

APLF Materials + is home to companies making a range of products, including some of the bonded materials and synthetic functional materials that manufacturers present as alternatives to leather. Fashion Access is for manufacturers and designers of finished products, including shoes, bags and other accessories. Cashmere World accommodates exhibitors who make products all along the cashmere supply chain, from yarns and fibres to finished garments.

“Moving Materials+, Fashion Access and Cashmere World to level one will fundamentally shift the fairs from a leather focus to a fashion-oriented group of fairs, which will attract not only leather buyers but also new fashion and interior designers from the generations Y and Z, reconnecting them all to the leather supply chain,” the organisers have said.
