Mat Abbott joins World Leather

World Leather is delighted to announce that Mat Abbott has joined the team as commercial manager. His expertise will also be of immense help to the magazine’s editorial team on technical content, helping to cement World Leather’s standing as the industry’s leading technical publication.

Mat Abbott has been an active member of the UK’s Society of Leather Technologists and Chemists (SLTC) for over 20 years and is the organisation’s president for the term 2018-2020. He also serves on the Technical Liaison Group that works with the University of Northampton’s Institute for Creative Leather Technologies, which functions as a steering committee on the technical content of courses there and as a liaison between students and staff at the university.

He studied at the university himself between 1994 and 1997, attaining an honours BSc degree in leather technology.

Soon after completing his studies, Mat Abbott went to work at Joseph Clayton & Sons in Chesterfield, starting as an assistant technical manager. After two years, he became technical manager and continued in that role until 2007 when he became works manager.

Still at Clayton’s, he went on to become technical sales manager in 2011 and technical director of the company in 2014. He was still the 178-year-old company’s technical director when it announced it was closing at the end of September.

Commenting on the appointment, World Leather’s chief executive, Simon Yarwood, said: “We are very pleased to have Mat on board. With the outstanding background he has in the leather industry, it was no surprise to learn that he began to receive job offers as soon as the sad news about Joseph Clayton & Sons broke. I am delighted he chose to join World Leather and look forward to having him help shape the future of the magazine.”
