It’s leather or leather on Polestar’s configuration tool

Specialist high-end electric and hybrid car developer Polestar has launched a new online configuration tool to allow pre-order customers to choose the options they want on their Polestar 1 cars ahead of full production beginning in 2019.

Polestar is a new division of Volvo cars, set up in 2017 to bring a new brand of electric vehicles to the market. The Polestar 1 will have three electric motors and a supporting combustion engine. The hybrid car will have a range of 150 kilometres running only on electric power, a distance that will allow many customers only ever to use the electric-power function of the car, the company has said. Two new models are already in development and both of these, mid-sized Polestar 2 and SUV Polestar 3, with both be fully electric.

It unveiled the Polestar 1 in China in October and gave it a European debut at the Geneva Motor  Show in March. Later that month, it started taking pre-orders for the car and recorded around 7,000 expressions of interest from potential customers in the 18 countries where the cars will be available. At current capacity at its newly designed production plant in Chengdu, it believes it will be able to make around 500 cars per year, with the asking price of the Polestar 1 set at RMB 1.45 million in China, €155,000 in Europe and $155,000 in the US.

On payment of a returnable $2,500 deposit, the new configuration tool allows customers to choose from six colours for the body of the vehicle and three colour options for the rims. For the interior, however, the choice for the upholstery is either leather or leather. In the information the company has made available so far, it makes references to “handcrafted leather detailing” as a highlight of the car’s interior. The configuration tool does permit a straight choice between charcoal and zinc for the colour of the leather.
