Gruppo Mastrotto invests in Lectra cutting technology

Italian tanning group Gruppo Mastrotto has invested in automated leather cutting technology from Lectra.

Gruppo Mastrotto produces and distributes a total of 21 million square-metres of finished leather every year at its 20 production and logistics plants, four of which are located outside of Italy. It believes automating its leather-cutting operations using Lectra’s technology will help it manage growth.

It increased its turnover by 10% in 2015 to reach €462 million; it opened a new Leather Fashion Hub showroom in London in September, aiming to deliver leather to designers there within 48 hours through its Gruppo Mastrotto Express service. It intends to set up something similar in Paris too.

It will equip its cutting rooms with the Versalis leather-cutting solution, which Lectra has said will enable “uninterrupted hide-cutting with an unparalleled level of quality and material gains, impossible to achieve using die presses”.

At the time of the announcement, Alberto Silvagni, Gruppo Mastrotto’s general manager for automotive leather, said: “The die cutters we once used would never have allowed us to keep up with the new demands of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).”

Lectra’s chief marketing officer, Céline Choussy Bedouet, said: “Consumers are demanding more and more options in leather seating, which is becoming one of the most critical components in enabling OEMs to differentiate vehicles. By helping Gruppo Mastrotto manage flexibility in its cutting process, we can help it reduce time to market and meet customer demands faster.”
