Ecco reduces global manufacturing capacity
Danish footwear manufacturer Ecco is closing its footwear factories in Portugal and Vietnam as part of a global restructuring programme that will affect approximately 2,400 jobs.
The closures involve the factory in Santa Maria da Feira, Portugal, where 632 people are employed, and the B?u Bàng facility in Vietnam, which has a workforce of around 1,400-1,600.
Ecco has attributed the decisions to declining sales, excess production capacity and the need to reduce costs. The group said it would concentrate its manufacturing activities at a smaller number of existing, more efficient facilities to support its long-term financial sustainability.
Production at the Vietnamese factory stopped on November 2, with the company preparing to dissolve its operations in the country. The Portuguese facility has also suspended production, with the closure process expected to be completed during the first quarter of 2027.
The restructuring will also involve a proposed reduction of around 400 positions across Ecco's regional and global functions, including approximately 80 jobs in Denmark.
Manufacturing will continue at the group's other facilities in Indonesia, Thailand and China.
The announcement follows two consecutive years of losses for Ecco. The company reported a net loss of €24 million in 2025, following a loss of €37.6 million in 2024. Sales declined by 5% in both years.
