Farmers raising bison in the US have secured the right to export a proportion of the meat they produce from the animals to the European Union duty free.

A new formal tariff rate quota arrangement gives US producers the right to ship 3,000 tonnes of bison meat to the EU per year.

According to meat export promotions body USMEF, the US has succeeded in securing tariff rate quota for bison in a number of markets recently, including Australia and Taiwan.

It said interest in bison meat had been increasing for decades in the EU and that the new arrangement would "heighten demand".

USMEF pointed out that, because bison is only raised in the US and Canada, there is no domestic competition in EU markets for shipments from the US.
