China imports more raw hides and skins, but pays less
Leather manufacturers in China imported 618,000 tonnes of raw hides and skins in the first five months of this year.
According to the China Leather Industry Association, this volume represents an increase of 1.6% compared to the same months last year.
In January-May this year, importers paid a total of $490 million for this material, which means a 4.1% fall in value year on year.
They also brought 244,000 tonnes of semi-finished leather into China over the same period, paying $320 million for it. These figures represent falls of 8.9% in volume and of 19.1% in value.
Imports of finished leather into China over the same period registered 14,000 tonnes in volume and $220 million in value, falls of 7% and 6.8% respectively.
