Commission still working towards a ‘smooth implementation’ of EUDR

25/06/2024

The European Commission has confirmed that it has received a high-level request from the US government to delay the implementation of the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).

It said that reports were true that senior figures in the US government had formally written to the European Commission to ask for the delay and said it would reply “in due course”.

A spokesperson for the environment, Adalbert Jahnz, confirmed receipt of the letter, but told journalists that it was not the Commission’s practice to “engage in exchanges with our major trading partners and allies via the media”.

Speaking about EUDR more generally, he reminded journalists that EUDR had been adopted by the European Parliament and by leaders of the 27 EU member states in June 2023 and that the regulation is due to come into application for large companies in December 2024 and for smaller companies in June 2025.

This recent article in World Leather explains in detail what EUDR will mean for the leather industry.

“We are working very actively in close collaboration with all stakeholders to prepare its entry into effect,” Mr Jahnz continued. “The co-legislators set the date for entry into effect for next year. We are keeping the situation under constant review and we are working hard to ensure that all the conditions are met for smooth implementation of the law.”
