Scottish Leather Group opens ‘super tannery’
Scottish Leather Group has successfully completed a seven-year project to build a £14 million 'super tannery' that will be one of the most sustainable in the world.
The new facility, located at Bridge of Weir in Scotland, will significantly reduce energy use by 82% and water by 42%. This is part of the company's ongoing investments to reduce its carbon footprint and improve productivity, which includes a Thermal Energy Plant (TEP) and a Water Treatment & Recycling Plant (WTRP).
CEO Nicholas Muirhead has stated that this new super tannery is the latest milestone in the company's efforts to optimise productivity, quality, and sustainability. Scottish Leather Group's latest environmental, social, and governance report shows a 90% decrease in carbon intensity over the last two decades, 100% traceability of raw materials, and 77% of waste recycled in 2022.
