European Union sanctions on Russia now include leather
As of October, trade sanctions imposed by the European Union on Russia and Belarus also include finished leather and semi-finished hides.
The Russian market currently represents less than 1% of the total overseas purchases of the Italian tanning industry, by far the biggest in the EU.
On the other hand, tanning industry body UNIC has said that for Italy, Ukraine is the most important partner in Eastern Europe. For the import of raw materials for tanning, Ukraine is in the twentieth place as a supplier worldwide. Ukraine is in the seventh position regarding semi-finished products, with a participation of 3% of the total.
From 2017 to 2021, Italian imports amounted to 10,000 tonnes in volume, with a predominance of semi-finished products.
