France regulates plant-based protein labelling

07/07/2022

Companies selling plant-based products that mimic meat will no longer be allowed to use terms associated with meat in their marketing in France under a new law that will come into force on October 1.

France is the first European country to regulate the marketing terminology used by plant-based protein products.

The new law says companies will not be able to use “sector-specific terminology traditionally associated with meat and fish to designate products that do not belong to the animal world”.

The decree only applies to products made in France, which has led some critics to say the new law does not go far enough.
